Vintage Footstool – From Bare to Bold

This cute footstool arrived in my workshop for renovation from a friend.

The old upholstery had been stripped, so my job started with repairing the small frame. It needed some wood filler to smooth out old staple holes and a couple of cracks. We debated painting the frame but decided the warm wood color fit the style of the selected fabric better.

Once the frame was repaired, I used my trusty Surebonder pneumatic staple gun to attached the upholstery jute. These straps form the foundation that supports the padding. I added foam and a layer of batting on top before attaching the new fabric.

My friend has a great fabric collection and located this print in her stash. It was a small piece, but there was just enough to staple in place. As you’ll see below, the design ended up centered just right on the footstool. Serendipity!

I selected a trim (aka gimp) color to complement the fabric. Yellows are very popular in home decor this year. I think everyone is looking for happy colors after a dismal 2020. A high-heat glue gun is used to affix the trim over the staples holding the fabric. Getting around the unusual frame corners neatly was a challenge!

And here it is!

Isn’t this darling? I still can’t get over how perfectly this swatch of fabric fit the space. Best of all, my friend was happy, and that’s all that matters to me.
