Adding design elements can really make furniture sing!
There are several ways to apply designs. And you don’t have to redo an entire piece to include these accents. You can add them to a finished piece you already own. Here are four techniques that make the process easier than painting freehand.
Technique One: Rub-On Transfers
As seen in my lemon table makeover (Lemony Sewing Table Upcycle Pt. 2: Decor Transfers), rub-on transfers are an easy way to add professional-looking designs to furniture.
The design is put in place and rubbed from the front side to adhere it to the piece. These decor transfers can be cut to suit your space and come in a wide variety of designs online and in craft stores.
Technique Two: Decoupage
Another way to add a design element to furniture is with decoupage. ModPodge® is probably the most popular product used.
The glue-like substance is applied to the furniture, as on the front of this vanity drawer. Then the decorative paper or fabric is placed on top of the tacky surface. Finally, another layer (or polycrylic) is applied to protect the surface.
Technique Three: Stenciling
Stencils are a way to add a painted design to furniture. They are readily available online and in craft stores and come in a vast array of patterns.
Stencils are typically made out of a flexible plastic that is taped in place. Then paint is dabbed atop the stencil, resulting in the pattern. You can also make your own stencil with an Xacto® knife and a piece of stiff plastic.
Technique Four: Graphite Transfers
As demonstrated in last week’s blog post (Antique Chair: From Sad to Southwest), you can draw your own design and then transfer it to furniture. Color the backside of the design with either a black or white graphite pencil. After taping the design in place, trace over the front of the design to transfer the pattern to the furniture.
Once the pattern is in place, it’s a simple matter of painting in the design with the colors of your choice!
Transferring designs to furniture can add a real pop of fun or bit of flair to the piece.
In a matter of minutes, you can transform the look of a piece and make it uniquely your own!
