Remember these renovated chairs from my recent blog posts?
Super cute, right? But they just weren’t selling. If you think about it, who needs just one or two chairs of this type? This week’s post is all about how to make items more marketable by pairing them with another piece of furniture.
The Poppy Chair
The poppy chair makeover is still one of my favorites, but a single chair of this style is a hard sell. It sat online for a few weeks, liked but not purchased. So I went hunting for a desk or vanity to pair with it. Serendipity! This sweet little table became available shortly into my search. Its turned legs were an almost identical match to the legs of my poppy chair. And the glass top was a real bonus, making this suitable as either a desk or vanity. Versatility in an item is always a selling point.
And here they are, matched together as a set!
I used the same Annie Sloan chalk paint in Pure White on the table that I used on the chair. Then, to really pull the two pieces together as a set, I decoupaged the poppy fabric onto the front of the drawer. I used Mod Podge Fabric to attach the fabric to the drawer face and Mod Podge Hardcoat on the exterior to protect the fabric from use.
It worked — as a set, this sold in minutes!
The Twin Cane Back Chairs
My elegant and bright cane back chairs were getting a lot of saves online but no offers. Working on the same theory as the poppy chair, I sought out a table to add to the mix. I wanted a small bistro table since there were only two chairs, but this was the closest I could find. The size was right, but the base was all wrong for this style of chair. So, I detached the top and added a wrought iron base from another table I found online.
And here’s the result!
I spray-painted the bronze table base with a Rustoleum matte finish in black to coordinate with the chair fabric. Then I drilled holes in the bottom of the tabletop to accommodate screws for the new base. After a couple coats of Farmhouse Paint in Classic White and Minwax Polycrylic to protect the top, this set was good to go.
Like the poppy chair, pairing these with a table did the trick. This set sold in just a few days.
The moral of the story is that I’ve learned not to be discouraged when something I love sits unsold. Sometimes it just needs the right partner to find the right home.
Stay tuned next week for a MAJOR furniture overhaul of an item you might very well have in your own home! In the meantime, if you have any questions about or interest in the items on my blog, feel free to drop me a line on my contact page or my Instagram shop (@serendipitysequelsmn).
