This little cocktail table was a freebie I was given to rescue.
Not my usual style, but I came to appreciate the handled sides as I moved it around my workshop and used it for occasional emergency tabling. (That happens, right?) But the hinges on one side were broken, and the whole table needed an overhaul.
Step One: Repair
A chunk of the wood was missing — unfortunately, the piece that two of the three hinge screws bore into. So I had to replace the wood before the hinge could be re-attached. I cut a small piece of scrap wood and glued it into place. Since it would be under the hinge, it didn’t have to be fancy.
Step Two: Hinge Brightening
The hinges were badly tarnished. I tried using brass cleaner, but the finish was too far gone. So, I painted the hinges with gold metallic paint instead.
Step 3: Wood Touchups
The table top and legs had a lot of scratches. No big nicks, luckily; just evidence of regular wear and tear that tables endure. Paint stain pens are an ideal way for you to cover up minor scratches or dings on your furniture. Available in a variety of stain colors, they apply easily and dry quickly.
Step Four: Wood Conditioning
The wood was very dry, so it was essential that the wood be reconditioned. To do so, I used my favorite furniture salve, Wise Owl®. You simply rub it on and then buff. Wait until you see how it made the table glow…
Tada! Looking good now!
This was a super quick weekend flip with techniques you can apply at home to an accent or end table you might have needing a little TLC.
