Vintage Dresser Mirror – From Neglected to Needed

Someone in the neighborhood offered this vintage dresser mirror frame for free.

And who am I to pass up a deal like that! This frame had an almost regal charm with its carvings at the top and sturdy bones. And I knew just how I wanted to repurpose it!

It was pretty dusty from 20 years in a garage, so I gave it a good wash. (I use a mix of water, vinegar, and dish soap in an effort to be ecofriendly and avoid harsh chemicals.) I skipped the priming this time since I planned to use a dark chalk paint, diving right in with two coats of Annie Sloan’s Oxford Navy.

I enhanced the details with a gold Sharpie. I recently read a blog describing the use of permanent pen, protected at the waxing stage. So I gave it a try and sealed the whole frame with Annie Sloan’s clear wax. It worked great!

Then I had to figure out how to turn this into the kitchen/mudroom command center I had envisioned.

WOW are cork boards and dry erase boards expensive! I tried all sorts of recycled options, but I ended up having to buy new. But that did give me the ability to get a combo board that fit my opening perfectly. Attaching it to the back with screws was a process – that’s some quality hardwood, emphasis on the word hard!

And here’s the result!

What a change, right? I added a key rack at the bottom and a hanging wire to the back, and now it’s ready to take center stage in someone’s home to keep everyone organized!

Status: SOLD!
