Corner Chair – From Dour to Delightful

I fell in love with the shape of this chair.

How often do you see a chair that tucks into the corner of a room? It was in fabulous shape but was begging to be brightened up.

My first step was to figure out how to get the cushions off. The side cushions were installed in a way I hadn’t seen before. The boards were basically jammed onto nails! I pried them off but was really worried about getting them back on later. But there was primer and paint to tackle before that.

I was starting to doubt my skills when I couldn’t get one of the sides off. So much for those special drill bits I’d bought for the purpose. I gave up and painted it in place. I primed with Zinsser BIN and then added two coats of Annie Sloan’s Pure White. Clear wax was used for the topcoat.

If you look closely, you can see tiny nail heads on the side panel. Those were my targets for matching the old punctures in the upholstered panel!

Thankfully, the reupholstery part of this project was easy. I adore my new Surebonder pneumatic staple gun. I’m always happy to break that out! Then it was just a matter of reattaching the upholstered panels to the frame. The seat simply screwed in place, but I literally had to pound the sides back on.

And it worked!

I was able to get the chair back together and lined up evenly. Phew! Now doesn’t this look fresher and perkier? This fabric from Spoonflower was perfect for the vibe I wanted.

This sweet chair has already found a new owner. It’ll be hard to say goodbye, but I know it’s off to spread joy.
