Accent Chair: From Screamy to Dreamy -Part 2

Remember this accent chair from a few weeks back?

I was trying to forget it. All the steps required had me a little overwhelmed. But for my 100th blog post, I wanted a BIG reveal!

Here’s where we left it last time: repaired, painted, and starting its reupholstery journey. Accent Chair: From Screamy to Dreamy

Step Four (Cont’d): New Stuffing

With the seat bottom complete, it was time to start on the sides. Removing the tufted appearance meant having to accommodate some strange angles in the new upholstery. I used soft padding instead of foam to better contour the chair shape.

Then I repeated the process with the back and exterior sides. I strategically stapled the batting in place to avoid sagging.

Step Five: Fabric

Next it was time for the part I was truly dreading — adding the fabric. If I goofed this up, it was going to be an expensive mistake. I wrestled with the fabric for ages but finally had to accept that the fit wasn’t going to be perfect since I’d removed the tufting.

Let the stapling begin! (Even the prospect of using my fave Surebonder® pneumatic staple gun wasn’t cheering me up.) First, I anchored the fabric in front beneath where the bottom cushion sits. Then I stretched the cloth over the arms and back and stapled it at the rear.

Then I repeated the process with fabric on the exterior of the chair. I tucked the fabric under along the wood parts of the arms and stapled it in place. Then I attached the fabric to the bottom edge of the chair in the same manner.

I made matching double-welt trim and hid the staple lines using professional grade fabric glue.

Step Six: The Cushion

Finally, I used the old cushion to create a pattern for cutting the new fabric.

I created cord trim for the edges. Then I joined the top and bottom of the cushion with a side panel to make a zippered pocket for the stuffing.

Once the cushion was stuffed, I started feeling better about this chair. But would it be worthy of a milestone blog post?

What do you think?

Despite the struggles, I think this one turned out pretty great in the end. On to the next 100!
