Vintage LP Cabinet – From Grooved to Groovy

Recognize this piece of furniture?

If you were born before 1978 or have vintage taste, you probably can identify this as a cabinet for storing vinyl record albums. LPs and turntables are hip again, and both of my kids own them. I found this just in the nick of time as a going away gift for my son, headed out-of-state to his first apartment. It was the perfect size for his turntable on top, too. Serendipity!

The cabinet arrived in my workshop in a rather unfortunate shade of mustard, so I knew that had to go. I also wanted to change the style to something a bit more contemporary. First, I tackled eliminating the decorative grooves on the doors by filling them with wood filler and sanding them smooth. I would have liked to have replaced the decorative edge at the bottom with a simple straight-edged trim, but there just wasn’t enough time.

I was pleased to see the cleaner design of the doors after I primed them with Zinsser. The grooves and the mustard were gone! I didn’t have time to use chalk paint and protective wax this time around, so instead I chose a semigloss latex paint to speed up the drying and curing process. Can’t say I was super thrilled with the finish but, hey, sometimes you have to adapt to circumstances.

A bit more modern, right?

I replaced the old-fashioned knobs with a couple of brushed nickel pulls that complement the contemporary feel of the piece. You’d never even know it once had grooves on the doors!

And yes, I painted the interior as well. Ended up with primer in my hair while squeezing into those tiny spaces, but it was worth it!

Check back next week for the new reveal from my workshop. As always, if you have any questions about or interest in acquiring the items you see on my blog, please let me know via my contact page!
