Upcycled Block Table – From Frumpy to Fun

This vintage dual-level end table was in terrific condition — perfect for my upcycling makeover.

I had seen examples online of converting these tables into platforms for building blocks like Legos(TM). When this became available, I jumped at the chance to acquire it.

The first step was to (gasp!) cut a hole in the top of the upper level. This is where I would insert the bin to store the building blocks. I felt a little guilty cutting a hole into a perfectly good piece of furniture, but I knew it would be worth it. And it’s always best to have a place to wrangle those tiny blocks since they’re agony to step on!

Then I primed the table with Zinsser BIN prior to painting it with two coats of Annie Sloan’s Pure White. While it dried, I cut the building block base plates I found on Amazon to fit the lower level for the play surface.

The base plates were bright green, so I wanted pops of color on the body of the table. I decided on colors customarily used for the plastic building blocks to keep with the theme. The decorative grooves were an ideal place to add the accents. After a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear wax, the block table was ready to reveal.

And here it is, ready for some playmates!

This was a lot of fun to create! It’s compact and colorful and includes what everyone loves — storage. I hope it brings joy to some lucky kids soon.
