Where lucky furniture gets a second chance
Vintage Bench: From Meh to Mod

Vintage Bench: From Meh to Mod

This vintage bench was a lucky find for me.

The previous owner had already stripped all of the upholstery, saving me from removing trillions of staples! A clean slate to get started.

Painting

Or so I thought. When I got it home, I realized the previous paint job wasn’t the quality I’d hoped. So, I sanded the paint and applied the brand I prefer: Farmhouse® in “Black Noir.”

Reupholstering

The biggest job was, of course, the upholstery. Time to play with my Surebonder® pneumatic staple gun! The beige dust cover on the underside was visible along all the edges, so I replaced it with a black cambric dust cover.

Then I improved the repairs that had been done to the springs. After that, I added thick, batting-like cushioning.

Next, I stapled the new mod print into place. As you’ll see below, the diamond-like centers in the colorful print echo the diamonds in the center of the bench back designs.

Finally, I created black double-welt trim to match the fabric and glued it in place to hide the staple line.

This print puts the “mod” in “modern”!

It’s such a bright, fun result that will liven up someone’s entry or bedroom.
