Vintage Dresser: From Sketchy to Sturdy Part 2

Recall this dresser from last post?

It desperately needed drawer repairs. See Dresser Repair: From Sketchy to Sturdy Once fixed and sanded, it was time for the fun!

Step One: Pre-Painting

This dresser needed a LOT of prep. In order to avoid the very dark stain and varnish bleeding through the paint, I first applied shellac to all the surfaces. Then I added a coat of Zinsser BIN® primer. But the varnish was STILL peeking through on the drawer sides. So I applied another coat of primer!

Step Two: Painting

I knew from the shellac & primer stage that this dresser was going to take more than one coat of paint. So two coats of Annie Sloan® Scandinavian Pink went on next. I usually don’t paint the entirety of drawer interiors, but these needed it!

Step Three: Wax

My client wanted a matte finish for the dresser, so we went with Annie Sloan® Clear Furniture Wax for the protectant. I applied the wax with lint-free rag, wiping off the excess.

Step Four: The Bling

This sweet little pink dresser begged for darling details. My client provided these wonderful rosebud pulls to replace the old wooden hardware.

To break up the all pink look, I added stenciled details in Farmhouse Paint® “White Ash” to the sides of each drawer. When the drawers are opened, this little detail will peek out!

The last touch was adding a floral liner to the drawers. So much fresher and prettier than before!

And here she is!

All dressed up and ready to go to her new home. What a difference a little paint and new hardware can make!
