Drop-Leaf Endtable: The Votes Are In!

It’s time to reveal the makeover of this drop-leaf table, designed by YOU!

In celebration of my approaching 100th(!) furniture makeover, I asked readers to pitch in and select the color for this handmade cutie. (See, Drop-Leaf Endtable: Your Turn to Help!). The votes are in, but you’ll have to read to the end to see what color paint won most readers’ hearts.

Stain – Attempt One

As promised, I sanded the top and stained it with “Espresso” from Minwax®. And it looked terrible — streaky and orangey. Why? Because I cut corners, and I should know better! I was tight on time and it was a small project. So I didn’t sand as thoroughly as I should have and forgot to use pre-stain conditioner. Blech!

Stain – Attempt Two

So, I had to start all over. I sanded the top down again — this time thoroughly to raw wood. And then I applied the pre-stain conditioner that I forgot the first time.

Much better! That just goes to show you that, if you want a quality outcome, you have to follow the proper steps! Minwax® Polycrylic will protect the finish of the whole table.

Primer

The resins in pine wood can bleed through paint, so it’s especially important to prime. Here’s the table, prepped in BIN® shellac-based primer and ready for your paint selection.

The Paint

These were the Farmhouse® paint choices offered for the table base. Thank you to everyone who voted. It was a close race, but the winning color was:

Paris Blue narrowly edged out Sage Shadow and Jalapeno to garner the most votes. Now it’s time to see your pick in action…

What do you think?

I’m happy with how this turned out but even happier that we could work on this shop class project rescue together. Let’s do this again sometime!
