Once upon a time, this dresser went through a lot.
I don’t know about ogres or dragons, but it definitely endured something like a damp dungeon as it was warped and a bit wonky. But my client rescued this damsel, recognizing its potential, and brought it to me for some makeover wizardry.
Step One: Prep
Like Cinderella getting ready for the ball, this piece needed some prep. First, I sanded down the top for re-staining and scuff-sanded the rest. Then I applied shellac to the drawers to re-introduce some moisture to the wood. Look at the difference it made!
Next, I polished up these cute brass keyholes for some glass-slipper-like bling.
Step Two: Priming
Applying Zinsser BIN® primer is such a refreshing change — like a frog becoming a prince. It’s exciting to see the potential unfold with every kiss of the brush.
Step Three: Painting
My client selected Farmhouse Paint “Old Navy” for a classic makeover. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, THIS will be the fairest of them all!
Step Four: Staining & Poly
Part of turning this beast into a beauty was re-staining the worn top. Minwax® “Early American” fit the bill for the mid-range tint without orange undertones desired by my client. Then I protected the dresser with Minwax® Polycrylic in a matte finish.
My client found these striking knobs at Anthropologie® to amp up the elegant look.
How’s this for a fairy tale ending?
Fit for a castle… and this dresser lived happily ever after!
