TV Stand Makeover: From Boring to Binge-worthy

This TV stand needed a reboot.

It was scratched and really dull. So I decided to do something to improve its ratings.

Episode One: Repairs

I filled in the dings and scratches with DAP® Plastic Wood. Then I scuff-sanded the glossy surface to encourage the paint to adhere.

Episode Two: Paint

I chose Annie Sloan® chalk paint in “Athenian Black” for the new look. I skipped my usual primer since the dark paint doesn’t require it. Frankly, I wish I hadn’t; I had to do a lot of touch-up where the paint had trouble sticking.

Episode Three: Adding the Bling

This plain TV stand needed something to make it unique. First, I added antique gold paint accents in the leg grooves and around the recessed grooves on the drawer fronts.

Then I applied Prima® geometric gold rub-on transfers to the drawers. For tips on transfers, see my post Lemony Sewing Table Upcycle Pt. 2: Decor Transfers. Next, I protected the surfaces with Minwax® Polycrylic.

Episode Four: Final Touches

To complement the geometric decals, I installed gold hexagonal knobs.

Then I lined the drawers and the back of the interior of the stand with a hexagonal gold pattern.

Season Finale!

This TV stand is no longer just a boring rerun. Now it’s something worth seeing!
