This is a great modern vanity bench.
But I recently replaced it with something more unique. (Vintage Vanity Makeover: From Boring to Blossoms) I planned to sell or donate this but then realized it would make a terrific bench/luggage rack for one of my guest bedrooms.
Watch how fast you can transform and repurpose one of your own pieces of furniture.
Disassembly
I flipped over the bench and unscrewed the seat from the legs. (This technique will work for many seats in your home.) Then I took apart the various base pieces. (I stood up the center rod to paint it since it was cylindrical.)
The Frame
The bronze metal legs of this bench were lovely but wouldn’t match my guest room. Time for Rustoleum® gloss white spray paint! This is a super quick way to change out the color of an item. Why not hand paint? You could, but I find spray paint (with a primer built in) works well on metal.
The Seat
Since this bench was only a few years old, the padding was fine. I simply wanted to change the fabric color. First, I removed the staples holding the dust cover and khaki fabric in place. I looked for lilac replacement fabric to match the bedspread but realized eggplant would be better. Since I want guests to use this bench for luggage, the darker color will show less dirt.
Then I wrapped the new fabric around the padding and stapled it in place beneath the wood base.
Next, I added the dust cover on the underside. (Who can spot my favorite tool?) Finally, I screwed everything back together.
Voila!
It really is that fast and easy to give an item in your home a fresh look. I completed this project in a matter of hours. And instead of buying a luggage rack, I got an existing piece of furniture to do double duty for me! So before you jettison a piece of furniture in your home, give some thought to how you can repurpose it with a makeover.
